Papervision Reality

3 Comments | This entry was posted on Nov 19 2008

Wow, the guys over at Digital Pictures Interactive have pushed the limits of Flash and Papervision to produce an application that reads your webcam image and renders a Papervision model (in this case a Monster) in real time. The application looks for a printed symbol and judges it’s proximity and perspective from comparing it’s edges. I would have been fine with just finding the object within the  camera and drawing the model, but these guys take it steps further and actually change it’s scale and pitch depending on how the paper is positioned.

Very well done! Read on to check out the video demo

Papervision and Geocoding

3 Comments | This entry was posted on Nov 04 2008

The June 2008 edition of Adobe EDGE has a great article on geocoding. Geocoding is getting popular with the release of Yahoo Maps, Mapquest, and Google Maps APIs. Suddenly any user can apply for one of those keys and start mapping locations on their site or even using those APIs to get geo location data to then use within their own mapping engine. That is where this example comes in. Adobe has written up a great article on getting started with using the Yahoo Maps API to get the longitude and latitude of a location, then converting that to 3D coordinates to place on a globe built in Papervision. The example is simple, but feels good and responsive.

Jeff Winder has taken the WiiFlash library and an WiiMote to rotate a papervision cube using the accelerometers of the Wiimote. To top it off, he has a Phidgets Servomotor that spins also to matech the papervision cube.

Play With Spider – Flash 3D

OneMotion.com has put together a neat experiment using flash and 3D (Papervision?). The demo is basically just a spider crawling around following your mouse in 3D perspective. There is a crontrol panel to alter different characteristics of the spider (Body Scale, Speed, Leg Reach, Height, etc…).

Great Job, creepy, but cool!

CornFlex has coming up with a neat way to incorporate Papervision and the new GoogleMaps api. It is a little primitive, but has a lot of potential. This would be a really cool screen saver.

MyDeco 3D Room Planning

The guys over at specialmoves have launched a new site for mydeco. The site is the brain child of Brent Hoberman, who also started lastminute.com. His vision was to revolutionize the way that people shop for their home.

Site is built in Flex and uses a flash 3D engine (Papervision?) to render the real-time 3D views of your layout.

FIVe3D: Flash Vector Based 3D Engine

There has been so much propoganda around Papervision, that I was unaware of other options. I was reading Zeh Fernando’s blog and he has been praising FIVe3D since it’s roots in AS2. According to Zeh, the difference with this engine is that it is vector based. As far as I can tell, this engine is only worth while when you don’t need to use a bitmap fill. I really can’t think of a time that I have/would need a vector only engine. If I do though, FIVe3D would be the way to go. It is a faster approach to text and vector textures than Papervision. It also seems there isn’t any online documentation either. Bummer…

Papervision Video Plane

UPDATE: I’ve uploaded the source for this project as is. I’ve got nothing for comments in the code, so your on your own. Feel free to leave a comment with questions and I’ll try and answer them. Get the Papervision Video Plane Source

There is a possible upcoming project that may involve video with perspective. I have been using Papervision for a couple of other projects and figured I would put together a demo to see how well it handles. Enjoy
