Droplet: Quick Drop.io Desktop AIR App

This entry was posted on Mar 14 2009

blogpost

I’m proud to announce the beta release of my first Drop.io desktop AIR application called Droplet. I built the application using my own Drop.io AS3 library. The application is very simple and offers the fastest way to upload a single file to Drop.io. Just open the application, choose your file, and Droplet uploads your file to a generate drop. Once uploaded, you have the option to upload another file (to a brand new drop) or view the drop you just created with your file!

If Droplet gains enough support, I would love to see further renditions of the application to allow more support for other Drop.io features. Until then, be sure to leave your thoughts in a comment below!

  1. Well Done!

Just sat down this morning with your drop.io as3 library, excellent work with that but I’ve been pulling my hair out over the file reference problem you’ve been having with it. Im guessing you solved it with using adobe air’s browse to open but what are you parsing through to get successful uploads to drop.io? ( if you dont mind me asking ;) Im getting null’s every-time :( and everything I’m trying just isn’t working.

    Cheers Karl.

  2. I had fixed the file reference problem I was having. In order to upload files to Drop.io, I’m using the Actionscript 3.0 Filereference.upload() method. It’s available for non AIR projects. Be sure to download the latest ZIP file from the Google Code page I’ve setup for the library ( http://code.google.com/p/dropio-as3-library/ ). The steps you need to take in order to upload a file to Drop.io using the library are: 1.) Create DropService instance 2.) Call the createDrop() method of your DropService instance (look at source code for parameters). 3.) Call the createFile() method of your DropService instance passing it the FileReference instance your application creates.

I understand this sounds confusing. I’ll try and find some time this week to get a quick tutorial setup. The important thing to remember is your application will need to handle the FileReference object in regards to choosing the file. One the file is choosen, you then pass that FileReference object onto the myDropServiceInstance.createFile() method.

  3. That’s a nifty app. No drag and drop though? I would have expected Desktop drag and drop for an application called Droplet! ;)

What happens if you’ve clicked on the wrong thing – is there a way to cancel the upload, other than closing the application?

Is it possible to open multiple instances of the application, so you can upload multiple things simultaneously?

  4. James,
The application was meant to be a quick means to upload just one file to a single drop. If you upload the wrong file, just start over and upload another. If the file is large and you don’t feel like waiting, just close the app and reopen it to upload a different file.

I’m currently working on a newer version that supports drag and drop. I hope to have it available soon.

I hope to have more time if the application gains any popularity to add more expected functionality (like you have mentioned above). To be honest, the app started out with more functionality in mind, but I simply ran out of time.

Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate your input!

  5. Hey Andrew,

Ive been working on adding some functionality to the drop.io as3 lib such as DropQueManager which in essance allows multiple files to be drag and dropped and then qued to upload. Once I’ve got it all sorted I could post it up and see if it gets your seal of approval if you like?

    Cheers

    Karl.

  6. Karl,
That sounds great! Feel free to comment with a link when you are ready.

  7. Thanks for the useful info. It’s so interesting

  8. Hi,

I noticed a flaw in this application (or it might just be with me). After dropping a file in a new drop, you can’t log in to the drop to manage the drop, hence making it useless to use afterwards.

I’d use this app if it allowed me to drop in already existing drops however.

  9. Galak,
Yeah, the app was more of a test of the AS3 Drop.io lib I worked on. Droplet is more for doing quick painless drops of files to send to others. Thanks for your thoughts, it’s great to hear what the people want.

  10. Hi Andrew:

    Fantastic job! Simple and eficient!

  11. Simple and effective…

Upload to existing drop is missing to be really perfect…

    Thank you

  12. Great to hear some thoughts on drop.io desktop air application. Keep them coming :)

    Cheers
    Karl.

  13. Maybe it’s just me (I’m super paranoid about security) but I’m wondering if it communicates to Drop.Io using SSL. (So that our passwords cannot be intercepted.)

  14. Karl,

Super cool, super easy, super useful! Quick question for you, can we add a password or am I just not listening to your statement about how it’s supposed to be a quick and easy way to create a drop? Don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not complaining, just had to ask!

    Thanks for the awesome app!!!

    Best Regards,
    Joey Goodman aka Joey Buddha

  15. Karl,
Ha, yeah the apps super simplicity tends to get people asking “Where’s [FEATURE]“. Adding the extra features that allow you to control a drop (admin password, custom name, etc…) take time and take away the simple 2 step process to upload a file: 1.) Choose File 2.) Visit Drop and make it a much more complicated task. This app is not the right fit if you are looking for something to manage custom drops.

  16. privacy?

Why has no one raised the issue… not even the deloper. The other AIR app featured by DROP behaving in a vexingly creepy way with no documentation whatsoever for use of LSO, and other AIR app generated content (XP)

What information is collected by your AIR app? Does that data live EXCLUSIVELY on user’s machine? Short of the content transferred to drop.io itself?

Will data live in other than

    %appdata%\adobe\air\*
    %appdata%\macromedia\*
    drop install location?

    thanks

  17. I can’t get past the install. airappinstall loads itself repeatedly and gives the message:

“Something went wrong trying to install this application. Please install the latest version of Adobe Air…” which I believe I have. I’ve not experienced this with other Adobe Air applications. The only way to stop stacking repeated airappinstalls is to quite FireFox.

    Software:
    Adobe Air 1.5.3
    MacOS 10.4.11
    FireFox 3.5.6
